If there is one thing that I wish every lawn had that one thing would be a check engine light. You’re all too familiar with this dreadful icon that pops up on your car’s dashboard when something is awry with the motor. It could be something simple or it could be near catastrophic but the point of the illumination is to get your attention so that you check something out before it becomes a bigger deal. Turf lawns obviously are not a machine but there is a lot of complexity to them or I should say there is a lot of misunderstanding of that complexity that goes overlooked. Things such as soil pH, organic matter content, CEC, also known as cation exchange capacity. These factors and a few other items that are invisible to the naked eye control things such as absorption of nutrients into the plant, water carrying capacity and the ability to hold onto nutrients. Not all soils are created the same but they all have the same fundamental strengths and weaknesses. While the average person might not be able to read the condition of the turf they certainly cannot observe microscopic data in the soil that contributes to these factors. I would highly suggest this year that you get a soil test. They are fairly inexpensive and if you know how to use the information they can pay for themselves rather quickly. A beautiful lawn doesn’t have to be a struggle, it should be fairly effortless. In my opinion, due to the strategy and the system that most people operate in puts the lawn at a severe disadvantage that costs a great deal of money to maintain. All can be corrected in time but you need to know where to start. Before you have a collapse in the system reach out to get help to help identify these issues, particularly with a organic biological system. You will never go back to the old ways again want to know the truth.
