You feel the squeeze when it comes to your lawn right? The seemingly high cost of maintaining a lawn seems to be getting higher. Am I right? The weeds, the thatch, the water, not to mention all of the harmful chemicals that you apply that are creating risk for you, your kids, your pets and the environment as a whole. So where does all of this need come from? Well it is the soil for starters but also the use of synthetic fertilizers.. Speaking of which, have you ever run across one of those people that are resistant to change, that don’t like new ideas or think that the way things are are fine and there is no room or need for improvement? Have you ever run into someone who opposes the taking of vitamins and minerals as a dietary supplement as they think that their diet is sufficient. I can assure you that if you study agricultural land in the US it is deficient in these nutrients due to soil degradation. They typically go on to say something like this: “Well it grows just fine without all of those materials.” This usually comes from a place of value, meaning there is not one and they are just trying to get by as cheaply as possible, but this begs the question, why have something if you are aiming for mediocrity? Hence my title of this blog, if you are going to do something why not do it well? In the case of many things this leads to efficiency and health both of which costs less in the long run but for some that is a hard point to be won. Quality of life matters, absolutely! Do you change the oil in your car every 25K miles or rotate your tires every 20K miles? I certainly hope not! The point is most people are engaging in a terrible form of landscape management and it can almost always be improved upon and become more efficient if one wants to recognize that there is a problem, change and press forward.
